Puerto Madero

We had a grand time today in Puerto Madero. We took the #92 bus to the Retiro Station and hoped to see the Immigration Museum but that is under renovation.

Near the Retiro Station is the Train station that runs up and down the Rio Plata. It would have been great to be able to take a train to Mendoza but they only run buses and planes to most other places in Argentina. This train runs up to Tigre and then on to Santa Fe, near Uruguay. The Train Station is a beautiful old building with the classic architecture for a train station. Lots of wood and glass gives this building an old world glamor to it.

So we kept walking and found ourselves down in the Puerto Madero new area with all the restaurants facing the old wharf.

We stopped for a picada lunch and beer across from one of the old Argentinian Navy ships. The lunch was fantastic with cheese and sausages and crusty bread and papas fritas. WOW! We needed the next three miles to walk this off.

The morning was great but the day got hotter as we walked all 4 Diques. The water is brown but as would be expected in a large city like this. It seems so small compared to other wharfs, which is probably why it was obsolete almost as soon as it was built.

The city built a new wharf a little farther north and this area languished in obscurity until some great minds came together and decided this would be a great urban redevelopment project. Now it hosts some of the finest apartments in the city as well as the best restaurants. The Catholic University has two buildings here and that seems to add to a youthful vibe as you walk around the shaded walkways.

La Recoleta Cemetary

Recoleta Cemetery

We are staying in an apartment about 3 blocks from Recoleta Cemetary. This cemetery was once the gardens of the adjoining church and was turned into a cemetery in 1822, the first public cemetery in Buenos Aires.

There are over 5,000 vaults here and the cemetery map looks like most city maps we are accustomed to. Every vault/tomb has an address. It became quite fashionable for the wealthy to purchase a plot here and it seems even in death the families competed to show each other how wealthy and important they were.

Long before Evita Peron was buried here it was the best address in the city. As they say…The best people were dying to get in!

We found the well fed cats were delightful but a little cagey. There is a group of women who come just to take care of the cats. These tombs were much larger in scale than the ones in New Orleans and the odd thing is that most of them you could look inside and see the elaborate stained glass windows and marble alters. And of course you could see the caskets. Most tombs could hold up to 25 caskets.

Now that the cemetery is full the only way to be buried there now is to purchase a tomb. The previous owner/family will remove the current “residents” and sell the tomb “as is”. There would generally be a lot of reconstruction as many of these tombs have not been cared for in years, either the tomb outlived all the relatives or the family is not as well off as it used to be so there is no money left over to care for the vault. I’ve heard of “outliving” your caretakers but “out-deading” them? What a shame.

How would you like to have made sure you were buried for all time in a spot of your choosing and then 75 or 100 years later your relatives need the money so they move your ass to some “lovely spot overlooking the river” and there you go.

Definitely worth a visit. There are a lot of photos here but the artists works on these tombs cried out to be remembered.

La Boca Neighborhood

This is one of the oldest parts of the city and of course you can tell by the less than desirable streets you come across. However, you can’t dismiss this neighborhood that easily, it has resurrected itself and is now known as the heart of Tango as the dance started here in this Bario over 100 years ago.

This is primarily an immigrants neighborhood. Most of the houses built here are made out of little more than wood and tin. These buildings do not age as gracefully as the gorgeous mansions and monuments to capital that are found in other parts of the city.

The color displayed today is a representation of the odd colors that they painted the buildings with many years ago. The paint for the buildings was generally the left over paints used on the ships in the nearby shipyards. Some buildings would have 4 or 5 colors as there was never enough of one color paint to finish a building.

While it is not recommended to walk around here at night we had a great time is the small downtown, touristy area. There were many shops with Argentinian handicrafts and mucho tchotchkes to the Tango.

La Boca

The colorful buildings are the highlight of this area. Tango started in La Boca (the mouth of the river) and it is well represented in the small shops and restaurants.
